Attorney-General Finlayson does his job
by Jake Quinn
I have nothing but praise for Attorney-General Chris Finlayson for doing his job as he should today when informing Parliament that work testing sole parents on the domestic purposes benefit is an unjustifiable breach of human rights.
The Herald reports that Finlayson said it was against the Bill of Rights Act that a woman on the DPB with a child aged over six could face work testing, while women on the widow’s benefit or the woman alone benefit do not.
He said the objective (of Bennett’s welfare reform legislation) was to create a fairer benefit system, but the different treatment of women on different benefits was not fair or rational.
He concluded that it “cannot be justified”.
